My Story
Daniel Ekdahl is a local Sea Bright New Jersey artist with a passion for batik and historical Japanese fish printing known as Gyotaku. After studying Art History at University of New Hampshire, Dan began practicing this traditional art and teaching Gyotaku classes for children. Living on a marina provides a convenient access to drop your fish at Dan’s for your own unique dockside fish print!
Gyo (fish) taku (rubbing) is a centuries old Japanese tradition for fisherman to keep records of their catches. Long before photography, anglers recorded their catches by covering them with sumi ink and pressing washi paper on their bodies to capture accurate images of the size and species of the fish. Afterwards, the non-toxic ink is rinsed off so the fish could be released, sold, or eaten.
